Allen "Al" Frielund

November 16, 1939 — January 17, 2022

Allen (Al) Richmond Frielund 82, beloved husband, father, grandpa & friend passed away with his family at his side, Monday, January 17th, 2022 after a courageous 65-year fight with diabetes.

Al was born November 16th, 1939 in Duluth to parents Marion & Raymond Frielund.  His love for the outdoors started when he was young.  He cherished time at the Sawbill Campground & the BWCA.  Al was a proud Eagle Scout and passed on his love for the great outdoors to his children & grandchildren.

He graduated from Duluth East HS in 1959.  He was a member of the Lancer’s Car Club. Al attended Salter Technical School to become an Electrician. His 40 year career started at Lakehead Electric.  Al then worked at UMD for 26 years until he retired.  In his retirement he continued wiring for his church, friends & family.  He had an incredible work ethic and kept busy with various projects.  Al was a member of Electrical Workers 242 & it’s Retiree’s Club.  He was a member of Hope United Methodist Church.

The family cabin was Al’s favorite place.  There you could always find a pot of coffee on the stove and something to eat.  He loved having the cabin filled with laughter.  Deer Camp was an Annual Tradition when family & friends would gather for 10 days each Fall.  Al enjoyed endless days there fishing, 4 wheeling, working on projects, gardening & campfires.

Al became a Type 1 Diabetic at the age of 17. He took incredible care of himself and maintained a strict diet with the help of his wife, Bonnie.  We are very thankful for the incredible care and support of his diabetes team at Essentia Health.

Al is proceeded in death by his parents Marion & Raymond Frielund who he lost at the tender age of 17 & 21.  His “second” parents Frida & Glen Geving welcomed him to their family & treated him like a son.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years Bonnie; son Andrew; daughter Lori (Darin) Hanson; grandchildren Kelsi & Lukan Hanson; granddogs Niko & Kabi; sister-in-law Betty Forsberg; nephew Bob (Jolene) Forsberg; niece Amy (Bobby) Condon along with both their families; cousin Rick (Ellie) Frielund & family; along with many friends.  Al will be greatly missed!

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 22nd at Williams-Lobermeier-Boettcher Funeral Home with 11:00 am visitation & 12:00 pm service, followed by coffee, snacks & fellowship.  Memorials can be made to Hope United Methodist Church: 301 W St Marie St, Duluth MN 55803.
