Arthur W. “Art” LaPlante, 88, of Duluth, died Wednesday, March 6, 2019 at his residence. Art was born on July 21, 1930 in Duluth to Albert and Clara LaPlante. He graduated from Denfeld High School where he was a member of the 1949 State Championship football team. Following high school, Art attended Marquette University. Art married Beverly Anderson on March 31, 1951 in Duluth and together they raised eight children. Art retired from U S Steel Duluth Works where he worked with the open hearth operations. Following his retirement, Art worked at the DECC where he was the Stage Technical Director and the Business Agent for the Stage Hands Local #32. Art was a member of St. James Catholic Church and an active member with the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed spending time at the cabin on Lake Elora, fishing, hunting, gardening and wood carving. He volunteered at the CHUM Food Shelf-Our Savior’s Lutheran Church location in West Duluth. Art was preceded in death by his parents, his 12 siblings, a daughter, Debbie High and his wife Beverly. He is survived by two daughters, Diane (Mark) Lund and Karen (Thomas) Reed both of Duluth; five sons, Scott of Seattle, Martin of Duluth, Keith (Kathy) of Duluth, Jeff of Minneapolis and Steve of Duluth; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends. Visitation 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, March 11, 2019 at St. James Catholic Church, 721 North 57th Ave West. Rosary service at 6 p.m. Visitation will continue on Tuesday from 10 until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. James Catholic Church. Rev Fr Richard Kunst officiating.
