David Kent

November 16, 1957 — August 13, 2019

David Arthur Kent, 61, of Duluth died at home on Tuesday, August 13th 2019 after a short illness. Dave was born on November 16, 1957 in Minot, North Dakota to Dennis and Barbara (Port) Kent. “Barney” graduated from Denfeld High School in 1976 and continued his education at UMD where he excelled as an offensive tackle on the football team, earning All-Conference Team honors. Over the years, Dave worked as an offensive line coach for the UMD Bulldog Football team during their first undefeated season, as a Sales Manager at Telephone Associates, and most recently as a valued team member at Dick’s Sporting Goods. He met the love of his life, Cindy Nelson, in elementary school and went on to marry her on June 27, 1981 in Duluth. Together, they raised a daughter and son who were the loves of their lives. He enjoyed annual Memorial Weekend trips with his college buddies nearly every year since graduation.  Dave and Cindy loved visiting their special places in the Virgin Islands and were so happy to share that with their children. Dave was an avid fisherman and duck hunter. He spent many fall seasons hunting with friends and his beloved dog Lily, and looked forward to training the next retriever generation in Daisy. He was loud, loved, and welcoming to all with a laugh that could fill any room and warm any heart. He loved the Vikings, winning the road card in Catan, and giving nicknames, especially to himself. A perfect day for Dave was spent at the cabin on Island Lake sitting on “eight more feet” with the ones he loved, or enjoying family, friends, and the beauty of nature from the pontoon. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Duluth. He is survived by his loving wife Cindy; daughter Elizabeth (Ben) Webber of Golden Valley; son Ryan (Ramona) Kent of Savage; his mother Barbara; sister Brenda (Craig) Buus of Proctor; mother-in-law Gwen Nelson; and many cherished family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Dennis, and brother, Daniel. Visitation will be 4-6 p.m. Sunday, August 18, at Christ Lutheran Church, 2415 Ensign Street in Duluth. Visitation will continue at the church on Monday, August 19 from 10-11:30 with the Celebration of Life at 11:30 a.m. A luncheon will follow the funeral service to share stories, laughter, and love.
