Delores Viola Johnson

September 19, 1929 — December 2, 2022

Proctor

Delores ‘Dee’ Viola (Doup) Johnson, 93, was granted her wish to join her husband in heaven on the evening of December 2, 2022. She passed away peacefully of natural causes while being visited and comforted by family members at St. Luke’s Hospice in Duluth MN.

Dee was born in Duluth on September 19, 1929, to Roy and Gladys (Christensen) Doup. She was the oldest of two children. She grew up in Homecroft and loved living in the country where the door was open to many relatives as a place to call home.

In 1948, Dee graduated from #1 Central High School. Her family moved to the downtown Duluth hillside where one of her first jobs was at Hotel Duluth. She was also employed at Western Electric, Glass Block in the housewares department and in the concession stand at the Duluth Arena Auditorium.

Although she was employed outside the home, her family, home and those in her beloved lower Piedmont neighborhood were her first priorities. Her smile and a plate of goodies on the table, even when there were a dozen neighborhood kids hanging out at her house, will long be remembered. All the heavenly ladies from the old neighborhood have been waiting to give her a great big hug once again.

Dee was an absolute marvelous mom to her children and the best ever grandmother and great grandmother. There wasn’t anything she wouldn’t do for those she loved. She provided a soft place to fall for anyone who needed it. Caretakers, friends and relatives loved Dee and she loved them right back.

Throughout her life, Dee gave to others.   She contributed to society through Ensign PTA, Cub Scouts as a den leader, Ensign garden club, Mary Circle at her church, and delivering Meals on Wheels for over 14 years. Dee was talented and embraced many hobbies such as bowling, volleyball, golf, sewing, knitting, embroidery, ceramics, metal works, reading, and gardening. She loved to travel with her husband, Lloyd, and together they ventured through most of the country.

Dee was an angel and the glue to her large Johnson family. She will lovingly be remembered and cherished. Rest in peace, sweet Mama Johnson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Gladys Doup, brother, Ralph Doup and sister-in-law, Betty Doup, her husband of 63 years, Lloyd O. Johnson, and her grandson, Lee Gonzales.

Dee showered her family with unconditional love and is survived by her eight children which include Debra (Bruce Bordson) Johnson, Brad (Carolyn) Johnson, Scott (Jill) Johnson, Rory (Sherri) Johnson, Keith Johnson, Colette Johnson, Brian (Kim Kaz) Johnson, Kyle (Stacy) Johnson and grandchildren Amanda (Mike), Thad (Missy), Brook (John), Autumn (Mark), Daniel (Angie), Tesa (Jayson), Dale (Kayla), JoLynn (Ron), Megan (David), Tarah Dee, Reid (Laura), Seth (Crissy), Zachary, Christian, Tanner (Allie), Owen, Gabriel and 13 great grandchildren.

The Johnson family would like to thank the management and staff at Scandia/Spirit Valley Assisted Living and the staff at St. Luke’s Hospital and St. Luke’s Hospice for their loving care and attention to Dee and her family.
