Doris Swanson

Doris L. Swanson, 96, formerly of Chambersburg Ave and Edgewood Vista. The Lord took her home on Feb. 3, 2017 in the Chris Jensen Health Center. Doris was born on Feb. 16, 1920 in Duluth to Bernard and Lena Myrwold. She was a graduate of Denfeld High School, Duluth Teachers College and The College of St. Scholastica, receiving her teaching degree. Doris married Clarence Swanson on Nov. 28, 1941 in Duluth. Doris taught school in several cities in Minnesota including Kettle River, Grand Marais and Duluth. Doris was a member of the former Temple Baptist Church where she sang in the choir and is now a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, needle work and advocated lifelong reading. Doris was giving, caring and loved spending time with her family and serving the Lord. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother-in-law, Harold Swanson and her husband, Clarence. She is survived by a daughter, Karen (Ronald) Whitwam of Caledonia, MI; a son, Charles (Etta Kae) of Sturgeon Lake, MN; four grandchildren, Todd and Jeremy (Kristin) Whitwam, Kim (Greg) Crawford and Heather (Mike) Stone; five great-grandchildren, Ethan, Henry, Simon, River and Max; a sister-in-law, Audrey Swanson; many caring nieces and nephews. Visitation 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral service Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2017 at the Emmanuel Baptist Church, 1505 Eklund Ave. Pastor David Mork officiating. Burial at Union Cemetery in the spring.
