Our amazing mother, Dorothy Joyce Bergman, 93, of Duluth, formerly of Woodland and Island
Lake, was given a beautiful, uncomplicated and calm passing by her Lord Jesus on Saturday,
August 9, 2025 at Ecumen Lakeshore surrounded by her family. Dorothy was born on April 2,
1932 in Cloquet, MN to Selmer and Salma Hanson. She graduated from Cloquet High School
and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Home Economics from UMD. Dorothy married Eugene A.
Bergman in Cloquet on July 17,1954. Dorothy worked at UMD in the Registrar’s office, was a
dietician at St. Luke’s Hospital, a substitute teacher, a food tester for Chun King, and taught
ethnic cooking at Superior Technical School, but her true calling was “being a mother and
homemaker.” She was an active member at Hope United Methodist Church. Mom was active in
her P.E.O. Sisterhood Chapter and Arrowhead Home Economics. She had a true and
committed daily relationship with God and was involved with Christian Women’s Bible Study and
Community Bible Study (CBS). She enjoyed playing bridge, cross country skiing, swimming at
the cabin, camping, fishing, cooking, gardening and blueberry picking. She was preceded in
death by her parents; a daughter, Lisa Whitlinger; her husband, Eugene; her brother and sister
in law, Richard and Jeanette Hanson. Dorothy is survived by daughters, Cyndi (Tod) Venberg of
Duluth and Jana (Mike) Larson of Lutsen, MN; and her son, Jay (Jill) Bergman of Duluth;
grandchildren, Matthew Berg, Lisa (Regina) Berg, Savannah Swanson, Troy (Desiree)
Bergman, Danielle (Randy) Lieser, Nick (Missy) Bergman, Beau (Hana) Larson, Ailee Larson
and Signe Larson; twelve great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Mom was the
ideal loyal and loving grandma to all her Grands and they lovingly called her Grandma Dodo.
