Dr. Violet Young

Dr. Violet Koski Young, Ph.D. age 91, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on June 10, 2012, at Mills-Peninsula Hospital following a brief illness. She was born in Duluth, Minnesota on January 7, 1921, and attended University of Minnesota, where she received a bachelor's degree and a PhD degree in plant physiology. She moved to California to pursue her career as a research scientist at the Carnegie Institute, where she was elected to Stanford Sigma Xi. She was the author of numerous publications. She was the beloved wife for 60 years of John Edwin Young, M.D. After brief periods spent in San Francisco, Baltimore, and Burlingame, the family settled in Hillsborough, where they lived for 50 years. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son John Lowell Young and his wife Pam, her daughter Diane Caroline Young, M.D. and fiancAC. Philip Crowley, her son Bret Lowell Young and his wife Susan, and her daughter Tamara Ann Young, as well as her beloved grandchildren Natalie and Christopher Young, Shannon and Ryan Mich, and Dean and William Young, and Amber Cosand and her husband Matt , and great granddaughters Megan and Erin Cosand. She was pre-deceased by her parents, Annie and Toivo Koski, and her sister Irja Koski. She will be missed by all for her intellect, her quiet modesty, her unwavering devotion to her family, and her love of nature. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Mills-Peninsula Hospital Foundation, 1501 Trousdale Drive, Burlingame, CA 94010. Graveside services will be held Saturday, June 23, 2012 in Park Hill Cemetery, Duluth MN.
