James "Jim" R. Midthun

August 27, 1935 — February 28, 2026

Duluth

James “Jim” “Grandpa Whiskers” Midthun, 90, passed away peacefully on February 28, 2026, in Duluth. Jim was born on August 27, 1935 in Wheaton, MN, to Hans and Elsie Midthun, who later moved to Duluth to raise their family.

Jim loved the Lord with all of his heart and faithfully lived out his Biblical values each day. His steady faith guided him through life’s joys and challenges; He was a constant source of strength and encouragement to those around him.

He proudly served his country in the Air National Guard, carrying a strong sense of duty, honor, and commitment throughout his life. He then started Midthun Masonry, which was his lifelong career that allowed him to leave a legacy with hundreds of houses that he built in both Chicago and Duluth. He also left an artistic legacy with being the personal stone mason for the Canadian properties of Jeno Paulucci. All of this paled to his roles as husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend.

Jim was preceded in death by his first wife, Margery (Bjorlin), who passed away in 1984. They shared 27 memorable years together while raising their three children. He was also preceded by his sister, Elois (Grant) Johnson. He is survived by his second wife, Shirley (Hanson), with whom he shared 35 adventurous years.

He is survived by his three children Brent; Jill (John) and their children Anna (Dave), Anders (Megan), and Bjorn; and Barry (Sarah) and their children Blaine, Daisy, Lily, and Maverick. He is also survived by Shirley’s three children Becky (Nicholas); Sherri (Julie); and Dave (Val) and their children Josh, Geramy (Lauren), Hunter (Rachel), Sam (Jaden), Bella (Adam) and Gunnar. Jim also had many great-grandchildren who adored him dearly. Jim cherished his family deeply and took great joy in being a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His love, wisdom, and steady presence will remain a lasting legacy in their lives.

Jim will be remembered for his unwavering faith, his servant’s heart, and the quiet strength with which he lived. He leaves behind a family who loved him dearly and a legacy rooted in faith, service, and devotion.

He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him. A private family burial will be held this week and a Celebration of Life will be held this summer in Duluth. Arrangements by Williams Lobermeier Boettcher Funeral Home.
