James Robert Melander, 78, passed away July 3, 2026. Jim lived a vibrant life full of activities, gatherings with friends and family and travel. He had an unmistakable passion and purpose for every day he was given. He was born October 31, 1947 in Duluth, MN to Evelyn and Robert James Melander.
Jim grew up in Duluth and attended Duluth Public Schools graduating from Denfeld High School in 1965. He attended the University of MN, Duluth and graduated with degrees in mathematics and geography. Jim loved teaching math, especially story problems and calculus. He taught math in Lacrosse, WI, Corowa New South Wales, Australia, Coventry, England and Gibraltar, Spain. He taught in Duluth at Washington Junior High and retired from Denfeld High School in 2004. Jim maintained his friendships with those he met throughout these places.
Jim participated in numerous organizations; he served on the executive board of the Duluth Federation of Teachers and its negotiations team during difficult times. Jim was an avid skier and was a member of the Spirit Mountain Ski Patrol from its inception until his passing--50 years of service. He was also a classic-car guy, attending car shows in his Mustang or RX7. He loved current events and politics, always willing and able to have a discussion. Jim was also physically active throughout his life, enjoying skiing, ballroom dancing, bike riding, rollerblading and working out. He was always up for an adventure, truly a life-long learner, a humanitarian and environmentalist.
Jim was the pillar of his family. He was loved by those who knew him. Jim was steady, trustworthy and supportive. His warmth and generosity made him a strong contributor of his many communities. His kindness touched so many people and he left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate to have known him.
Jim is survived by his sister Laura Melander, his family Chip (Nury) Eads, Daniella Eads, Logan Eads, Pamela (James) Bunt, his partner of 26 years Colleen Bryant, and “stepfather” to her children: Chelsea and Jason Harder.
Service for Celebration of Life will be Tuesday, July 14 at AAD Shrine Meeting and Event Center, 5152 Miller Trunk Hwy, Hermantown, M 55811. Gathering of friends and family at 11 am. Luncheon at noon.
Memorials can be made to American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association. Arrangements by Williams Lobermeier Boettcher Funeral Home.
