Janice D. Smith, 74, of Duluth, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday April 5, 2020. Janice was born in Duluth on May 28, 1945 to William Donald and Helen Ethel (Ricketts) Grimm. In the 1960’s, Janice attended The College of St. Scholastica Nurse’s Aide Course. She later worked for US Army Accounting, Valley Distributing, and she was Self Employed as a Housekeeper, operating her own cleaning business. Over the years she lived in Duluth, MN, Cooperstown, ND, Phoenix, AZ, several places in California, Cedar Rapids, IA, and Zweibrücken, Germany. She returned to her hometown of Duluth in 1985. Janice was fond of Bible Study, attending Church Services, and liked Volunteering with The Lincoln Park Community Center where she was also the Volunteer President of the Advisory Board for the last eleven years. She enjoyed Gospel music and did a great deal of reading about her favorite musicians, and collected their albums and dvd’s. Janice will be remembered for her good sense of humor, bringing a smile to others, and sharing stories about her childhood. She loved her family deeply, and gave her heart to all of her many, many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her siblings, Larry (Linda) Grimm of Germany, Gary (Linda) Grimm of Mankato MN, David Grimm of Duluth MN, and Eileen (Grimm) Borgh of Schofield WI; her children, Donald P. (Jill) Smith of Wyoming and Georgette L. Mitchell of California; grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins near and far. Janice is also survived by her long term partner, Bill Gilbertson who unselfishly devoted himself to caring for her needs through numerous recent medical challenges.
