Mary O. Olafson, 90, of Duluth, passed away Sunday, June 24, 2018 at the Solvay Hospice House surrounded by her family. She was born on February 27, 1928 in Emmet Township, MN to Oliver and Hazel (Golie) Elliot. Mary graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1946, St. Olaf College in 1950 and received her Master’s Degree in Education from UMD. She married Raymond Olafson on June 24, 1950 in Sacred Heart, MN. Mary retired from the Duluth Public School District where she taught Special Education. Mary was a former member of Christ The King Lutheran Church in Duluth and currently a member at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Superior, WI. Mary was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority, loved knitting, sewing and crocheting, donating mittens and hats to Kid’s Closet and reflux vests to newborns at Essentia Health. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Raymond, a son, Thomas, a granddaughter, Katy Bowen McCampbell, two brothers, John and Mornall Elliot, two brother-in-laws, Orion Haug and Delwood Wolff. Mary is survived by her children, Christine (Stephen) Hagman of Lakewood, WA, Mark of Duluth, Jeanette (Gary) Bowen of Ocoee, FL, Keith (Debra) of Duluth and Claudia (Glen Meister) of Duluth; two sisters, Joyce Wolff of Hector, MN and Marlys Haug of Sacred Heart, MN; a brother, Archie (Donna) Elliot of Lakeville, MN; grandchildren, Kjersti Hagman, Kyle (Veronica) Hagman, Brian Hagman, Kari (Mike) Bonestroo, Peter (Kristina) Bowen and Tommy Olafson; great-grandchildren, Lindsey, Clayton and Henry Hagman and Kylie Bonestroo. A special thank you to the staff’s at Viewcrest Health Center, Essentia Health and Solvay Hospice House for the care she received.
Visitation 11 a.m. until the 12 noon funeral service Saturday, June 30, 2018 at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, 320 North 28th Street, Superior, WI. Pastor David G. Schoessow officiating. Burial in Oneota Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Kid’s Closet of Duluth or Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank.
