Shirley Tillman

September 4, 1923 — February 18, 2016

Shirley M. Tillman, 92, of Mounds View, MN, formerly of Duluth, passed away Thursday, February 18, 2016 at the Hennepin County Medical Center. She was born on September 4, 1923 in Duluth to Walfred and Hilda Swanson. Shirley was a 1941 graduate of Denfeld High School and worked for Minnesota Power and Light following high school. Shirley married Lloyd Tillman on September 21, 1946 at First Covenant Church. Shirley and Lloyd owned the A & W Franchise in Duluth, opening their first Drive-Inn in 1947. Together, they opened four Drive-Inn's in Duluth, operating the Drive-Inn's until 1963. When the Miller Hill Mall opened in the early 1970's, Shirley and Lloyd opened the KarmelKorn Shoppe and operated the store until their retirement in 1986. Shirley was a member of First Covenant Church, Covenant Women, Gideon's International and the Swedish Cultural Society. Shirley enjoyed music, playing the piano and organ for groups at church. Shirley and Lloyd traveled extensively to Peru and several European countries including Sweden, visiting relatives and learning about their Swedish ancestry. Shirley and Lloyd welcomed into their home, Mathy Moreno, a Foreign Exchange Student from Peru from 1967 to 1968. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Harriet Hessen and a brother, Ronald Swanson. She is survived by her husband, Lloyd; a daughter, Cheryl (Brady) Reed of Redmond, WA; a son, Gary (Marilyn) of Spring Lake Park, MN; a sister, Elaine Swor of Fargo, ND; six grandchildren, Karen VanGuilder, Denise Selander, Scott Tillman, Matthew Tillman, Chris Reed and Justin Reed; 10 great-grandchildren. Visitation 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral service Monday, February 22, 2016 at First Covenant Church. 2101 West 2nd St. Rev Mark Kelly officiating. Burial in Park Hill Cemetery.
