Thomas Ivan Bellanger

Jul 12, 1945 — Aug 19, 2026

Duluth, MN

Our family says goodbye to our beloved husband, father, teacher, and our King, Thomas “Ningaa-bii-an” (Leader) from the Bear Clan.

Thomas Ivan Bellanger died on August 19, 2026, at his home, surrounded by his family. He was born in Squaw Lake on July 12, 1945, to Thomas Bellanger and Rachel Wakanabo.

He joined the United States Army and served during the Vietnam War, where he became a prisoner of war and earned 3 Purple Hearts for his bravery and sacrifice. He was also a faithful member of Iron Workers Union 512.

Powwows and ricing were very important to Thomas and a cherished part of his life. Finding joy, connection, and meaning in being surrounded by community, family, and tradition. He continued attending powwows until the day he died, remaining connected to something that meant so much to him.

Thomas lived a life rooted in strength, love, compassion, and service to others, especially his family. They were the center of his life, and his love for them was unwavering. He was quick to listen but slow to judge, always willing to hear others with patience and understanding. He gave of himself freely and expected nothing in return. Even during the final days of his life, he never complained. He faced the end with the same quiet strength and courage that carried him throughout his life.

Thomas is preceded in death by his parents; daughters, Kimberly Bellanger and Renee Van Nett.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Betty; children, Beverly (Roy) Morrison, Bonnie Bellanger, Thomas Bellanger III, Charmaine (Kevin) Bellanger, and Thomas “Bo” Bellanger; 13 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren, along with many other relatives, friends, and loved ones who will carry his memory in their hearts.

Visitation will be held at the Head Start Gymnasium, 36 University Dr., Cloquet, MN 55720, from Friday, August 21, through Sunday, August 23.

Burial will be held at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery on Monday
