Olivia Schadel

August 18, 1926 — December 25, 2020

Olivia H. Schadel, 94, of Duluth, died Friday, December 25, 2020 in Edgewood Vista Hermantown Memory Care, with family by her side.

She was born in Bieringen-Schöntal, Germany on August 18, 1926 to Robert and Paula (Kilb) Schmetzer.

She graduated from high school and attended two years of college. Olivia married World War II U.S. Army veteran, Bud Hudgins, in 1945 and immigrated to the U.S. in 1948. Olivia worked thirteen years as a long-distance operator and sales associate for GTE Telephone Company of Lafayette, Indiana, and for ten years as the owner of J.C. Package Liquor Store in Linden, Indiana. She married Robert Schadel on Oct. 18, 1986 in Duluth.

She enjoyed gardening, fishing, mushroom-hunting, birds and wildlife, knitting, crocheting, cross stitching, and crossword puzzles. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, the German Club and the Laurel and Hardy Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, James Robert Hudgins; her first husband of 31 years, Bud Hudgins; a brother, Robert, a sister, Margot Delenardis; a granddaughter, Tara Lester; her second husband of 20 years, Robert Schadel; a son-in-law, Bruce Scott; and dear friend Irma Carlson.

Olivia is survived by and will be deeply missed by a brother, Werner (Ruth) of Wernau, Germany; stepdaughters, Sharon Scott of Duluth and Darlene (Gary) Lester of Fort White, Florida; grandchildren, Brandon (Renae) Scott of New Albany, Ohio, Heather (Jeff) Ilse of Duluth, Adam Lester (Jolene Frederick) and Aaron Lester of Clearwater, Florida; a great-grandson, Ethan Ilse; and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Olivia's caregivers from Edgewood Vista Hermantown Memory Care and Essentia Health St. Mary’s Hospice.

Due to the pandemic, a gathering of remembrance will be delayed until summertime or 2022.
